I've experimented with this and found that 3 parts plaster of paris mixed with 2 parts cement will have almost the same durability as dental stone, but costs only as much as plaster of paris. Cement is the binder in concrete without the rocks and you can find it at most lumber yards. I used to use high quality plaster for all my modelling, but later found out that the highest quality plaster is more or less a mixture of cheap plaster and cement.
